About Me

The Kindling Kid story

My name is Alex Orloff, and I am from Marblehead Massachusetts. When I was 13 years old I bought my dad a kindling splitter for Father's Day. Even though I bought the gift for my dad, I was in charge of cutting all the wood. One day I was at my ski house in Vermont, cutting kindling for my family's fire, and I thought to myself "maybe I can sell some of this kindling to our friends and neighbors?"  I made up several bundles and started going door-to-door trying to sell them. I ended up selling out of all the kindling I made. When the ski season ended and I was back home in Marblehead, I decided to see how the business would do here. I again started selling to my friends and family, but then Covid hit.  As we were all in lockdown and eager to get outside, fire pits and solo stoves ended up being a great and safe way to enjoy the outdoors.  My business took off during those first few months.  I offered free delivery of my bundles and with the support of my community and social media, I could barely keep up with the demand.  As word of mouth spread, I ended up gaining popularity online and was able to strike deals with 3 local businesses to carry my product. Nowadays, The Kindling Kid is my full-time job and it is all because of the support of my local community and businesses.
